Government action is needed now

“Never Again” must be more than words – it must be a resolve to act.

It calls on us to remember the past and and honour the victims, but also protect our future by responding, with urgency and determination, to the alarming resurgence of antisemitism and violent extremism.

In Australia, the UK, the U.S., an increasing number of places just like Canada, we have seen the deadly consequences of unchecked hate, radicalization, and violence.

As we saw in Sydney, we are one intelligence failure away from a devastating loss of life. That is why government action is needed now—before tragedy strikes.

Urge Prime Minister Carney to take six critical measures to safeguard our country.

Canada’s Integrated Threat Assessment Centre (ITAC) has warned that the same conditions of virulent antisemitism, radicalization, and violent extremism that drove the terrorist attack in Australia are also present here.

The report concluded that “a violent, extremist attack in Canada, including one targeting the Jewish community, remains a realistic possibility.”

These threats impact all Canadians – as we saw recently with a foiled Islamic State-linked terror plot targeting both the Jewish community and all women.

That’s why, in a letter to the Prime Minister, CIJA urged the government to commit to critical measures at home and abroad to safeguard Canadians:

  • Expedite federal support for community security
  • Prioritize enforcement to disrupt this growing threat to Canadians
  • Advance legislative and policy change to address violent extremism and radicalization
  • Ensure clear and consistent public leadership to reinforce the message that exploiting a foreign conflict to target Canadians Jews will not be tolerated in our country
  • Strengthen ties between Israelis and Canadians
  • Confront the Iranian regime by enforcing terrorist designations, removing regime-linked actors from Canada and supporting multilateral action to transition Iran toward a better future for the Iranian people without the IRGC
