Over the past few months, the Prime Minister laid out clear principles for Palestinian statehood: return of all hostages, removal of Hamas, and a “Zionist Palestinian state.”
But now, after a single phone call with PA President Mahmoud Abbas, known for corruption, Holocaust denial, and paying terrorists, Carney announced Canada’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state in September without any real change on the ground.
This will only embolden Hamas and condemn both Palestinians and Israelis to continued violence and suffering.

Without real change on the ground, recognition would create another failed pseudo-state controlled by terrorists. This will only deepen the suffering of both Palestinians and Israelis—and prolong the nightmare for the families of hostages still brutally held by Hamas in Gaza.
Our community wants an end to this painful conflict and a better future where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist in peace. But that future is only possible when statehood is conditioned on real change—including the return of all Israeli hostages, disarming Hamas and affirming Israel’s right to exist as a democratic Jewish state.
Last month, Prime Minister Carney said a Palestinian state must be Zionist and free from Hamas. Now is the time to stand by these and other foundational principles—not abandon them.
According to the Prime Minister, “this intention is predicated” on commitments to democratic reform and demilitarization, based on a single phone call with Mahmoud Abbas. The 89-year-old Palestinian Authority President, in the 20th year of his 4-year term, is notorious for his corruption, Holocaust denial, and for paying terrorists to murder Jews.
